Gail, the medications, the changes, the danger of toxicity... I know what you've gone through.

I couldn't tolerate Topomax at all, and Depacote made my platelets drop, too. Lyrica, hyrdocodone, and the triptans are what I use now, with a touch of Phenergan on really bad days.

I feel like you are describing my life with migraine, although I am much better now. I found relief with Depakote, 1,000 mg. per day and Verapamil 180 mg 2 tabs AM and 1 tab at bedtime. Unfortunately, I had to give up the Depakote, because it caused a drop in my platelet count. Because I needed cortisone shots in my spine, I had to give up the Depakote and started Lyrica for sciactica and migraine. With the triptans, I can manage. I have also tried Topamax with horrible results, in July 2005 I nearly died from an overdose. I was hospitalized for 5 days, with a toxic buildup in the liver. Depakote is my favorite of many medications I've tried over the years. Gail

You describe exactly the strategies my husband has taken to relieve his ice pick headaches. I feel helpless that he cannot find any relief. Migraines run in his family on his father's side. We have been to specialty clinics-Jefferson Headache Clinic in Philadelphia for infusions, tried a number of OTC, prescription-non controlled and controlled medications- to alleviate his pain for over 10 years. He's had every type of scan or x-ray done to determine the cause and nothing. On one hand we're glad, but on the other it's so frustrating to think that something isn't out there to correct/manage this debilitating disorder. The FDA just recently approved a new medication that is due out mid-May, so I'm sure his PCP will want to try that.
Most recently he was released from the hospital due to excessive vomiting. He has lost over 20 pounds within 6 months because he can't eat.
We are now working on alternative methods as you mentioned-acupuncture, fever few, deep breathing, chiro, etc... and pray to God that something will bring him relief.

My 13 year old daughter gets migraines and her pediatric neurologist (after trying everything else)suggested taking CoQ10 - 100mg. in the a.m. 100 m.g. at night. She still gets occasional migraines, but they are not as severe when she does.
She was doing so well after a year or so, she stopped the CoQ10. About a month later, her migraines returned and it took a couple of weeks back on CoQ10 to get her headaches back under control. We're believers! Hope this helps!

Wow, that sounds very tough. I had a sister that had the same problema and now is almost completely better. I do not want to provide false hope and there is no mericle cure, but she began eating a strict diet and takeing some health supplements. Another factor that helped her was constant chiropractor treatments. Not cheap, but worth it.

If you are looking for what might help with health supplement, try www.nutritionaltree.com

They also have a naturopathic doctor by state list at the bottom of the left nav bar. As far as chiropractors go, I am not sure about what is in your area.
